The Peace We Crave

Journaling and Your Recovery

When we enter a 12-step recovery program, it is suggested to many of us that we write a gratitude list every day. Many of us write extensive lists when completing our 4th and 8th steps. Why all the writing?

Writing out a thought or personal problem helps to slow down the mind. When the mind slows down, the nervous system can begin to relax and we can begin to heal. Writing is a form of meditation. We become more aware of our thoughts and we gain a sense of clarity that doesn’t happen unless we practice it.

Seeing something about myself in black and white on paper puts a totally different perspective on it than if I just say it or think it. It becomes real and concrete. I have a hard time communicating the thoughts in my head and writing them down allows me to slow my mind to truly see and communicate what I am thinking. If necessary, I can then start to put some action behind it if I need to change or make an amend to someone. I’m also able to see my feeling for what they are – just feelings (not facts!). I can say whatever I want as no one will ever see it. I can yell, scream, cry, be joyous – whatever I want. It’s a source of freedom that helps me to stay sober, one day at a time.

As I do my journaling practice each day, like with meditation and prayer, I start to slow down more and more over time. As my mind becomes clearer, I’m able to allow more imagination and inspiration into my life. My journaling practice has helped me to write some really wonderful meditations. I’m able to bring more creativity into my work and help to inspire others.

Just like the program, it works, it really does.
