Community and Connection

"We commenced to make many fast friends and a fellowship has grown up among us of which it is a wonderful thing to feel a part of. The joy of living we really have, even under pressure and difficulty." ~ Bill Wilson

There is so much power in a group of people who share a common bond. Many like myself feel the love and connection during their first 12-step meeting. Then it is suggested to get a home group, get a sponsor, and get into service while starting to work the 12 steps. Why? It helps me to foster a sense of community and connection with others who are going through the same thing that I am – just trying to stay sober one day at a time. While connecting with others in service and in meetings, I have learned a lot about myself. I know what I like and what I don’t like. I’ve learned how to have fun sober. I’ve also helped others to do the same.

If I have a problem, I can take it to my sponsor, my network, or the group. I can get many different perspectives as my Higher Power speaks to me through each person. I might begin to look at the problem differently and gain new insights I would not have thought of on my own. Eventually, I might help someone else feel the same way. While living life of life’s terms, I’m able to find a sense of freedom from problems and issues that once seemed unsolvable. They may not ever have a solution but I don’t have to let them rule my life today. What a gift!
